Takeaways - Gluten Free Diet

Takeaways are a whole different kettle of fish. Many guides may recommend you avoid this food and that food from a take away, but the fact is many takeaways are busy places and to a degree work sloppily behind closed doors. There is a high chance of cross contamination with your food. I would recommend you avoid them all together to be guaranteed a comfortable nights sleep!

If you must have a takeaway, the least I can do is point out some of the potential mistakes to avoid:

  • Pizza Takeaways: Normal pizza bases are made using wheat and are therefore riddled with Gluten. As ridiculous as it may sound, the only way of being able to order a Gluten Free pizza would be if you provided your own pizza base and then there is always the risk of cross contamination, so you will have to decide if it is worth the risk. You would be better off making your own.
  • Chinese Takeaways: Many types of Chinese food will be cooked using the same frying pan and so once again there is a chance of cross contamination occurring. Obvious foods to avoid are wheat noodles and soy sauce. Many other Chinese foods are also served in sauces and therefore you should try to pick a dish thatís sauce free.
  • Indian Takeaways: Avoid all bread that is served with your takeaway. For example chapati bread. Check how the curry sauces are made and what kind of flour they use to thicken the sauce ensuring it is Gluten Free.
  • Fish and Chips: Battered fish is guaranteed to contain Gluten and if chips are cooked in the same oil as the fish, avoid this takeaway all together!
